There is imbuing and coating when it comes to Haki.

Luffy, Doffy, Chinjao, and Katakuri all showed examples of imbuing their attacks with CoC.

So it stands to reason coating attacks with CoC was always part of the plan, as coating with CoA has always been a thing, and imbuing attacks with CoC has been known about since Dressrosa. If you can both imbue and coat with CoA, then obviously if you can imbue with CoC, then coating should also be a thing.

It was never part of the plan, because neither Shanks/WB nor Kaido/BM used it in their clashes.
