Questions & Mysteries Is Franky better at handling Technology than Vegapunk?

#1
Now first and foremost, I want to say that this is not a matter of Franky being smarter than Vegapunk. Vegapunk is a scientific genius, and his ability to understand things on a scientific level, and come up with ways to manipulate them is unrivaled. This is strictly about Franky having a better understanding of how technology works. I would liken it to a scientist who comes up with ideas, and the engineer who puts it into practice.

Now the reason why I bring this up is because I was reading up on Vegapunk, and I realized something. During the two year timeskip, when Franky was sent to Future Country, he stumbled upon Vegapunk's laboratory that he had when he was much younger. There he found a multitude of blueprints drawn up by Vegapunk, and failed experiments. We learned that the reason Vegapunk's experiments ended in failure is because he lacked the funds and tools needed to complete them, which is why he ended joining the Marines in the first place, because of their infinite resources.

So this brings me to the point of this discussion. Without having any scientific background of his own, Franky understood technology to such a degree that he was able to modify himself into a cyborg, all on his own. Then when Franky was sent to Future Island he was able to take the blueprints he found there, and actually make them work. He recreated Vegapunks pacifista laser, and was able to upgrade his cybernetics exponentially, all while lacking the same tools and funding that Vegapunk did. So my question is, from a strictly technological standpoint, is Franky better at putting ideas into practice than Vegapunk is?

That seems like it. I think in addition to that, he is better at creating weapons with that tech than Vegapunk. It is also important to note that Franky was the first human cyborg before Kuma

Franky is a lifelong mechanical engineer and he's completely great at it. We don't even know who rivals him. But Vegapunk is the foremost polymath. Where Franky is totally oriented to ship building and combat, Vegapunk has his hand in many different aspects of science, including political science if he's anything like the people who have known him.

You're comparing Philip Johnson to Bernini, more or less

I’ve been writing a big post on this topic for the final round of the Royal Rumble...even though that’s basically done now that Neutral deactivated his account, I’m still gonna put it up soon, so my thoughts will be available there in the next few days. Suffice it to say, I think Celestial is hitting a lot of the same points, and while I think Vegapunk is superior in terms of intelligence, I believe we have not yet seen the full fruits of Franky’s training during the timeskip. Moreover, I’ll posit that there is a lot more to see in regards to Vegapunk’s work on understanding Devil Fruits, and Franky will be the conduit through which that comes to fruition.

Sheldon Cooper (Vegapunk) vs Howard Wolowitz (Franky)^^?

But more seriously, yeah Franky is amazing building stuff and using technology at hands to do a lot of things.

In the creativity, thinking process, and science exploration Vegapunk is obviously above Franky by a good margin. But in the pure engineer and building they are maybe closer. Vegapunk managed to build a lot of things : Pacifista, new weapons, new boats, using sea stones in different ways etc but Franky has also some good feats and the way he used old Vegapunk lab is one.

And it is likely that Franky will one day build Pluton.

I can't say Franky is really better than Vegapunk in that area but they are likely close.

How does Franky not have a scientific background when he turned himself into an android and has been building powerful and unique warships ever since he was a child?

To anwser your actual question, Franky is not better than Vegapunk at anything. Franky will surpass him at the end of the series just like the rest of the Straw Hats will surpass their mentors by then.

I don't even think Franky will surpass Vegapunk in every fields. Vegapunk can build weapons and boats etc but Vegapunk also worked in cloning, with DNA, with DF etc. I don't think Franky can also do that. Franky will be the best to buid weapons, boats etc but vegapunk will still be the best inventor and the best in other fields.

Franky's the Mr. Fix It/Tony Stark of the One Piece world. He can take any scraps and turn them into something practical. This is why Franky can get by without haki. He's significantly more dangerous when you provide him with actually useful resources and material. And the One Piece world has in its disposal amazing material, such as Wapol metal and Sea stone. We already see that with the Sunny, something he was able to build using Adam Wood, and it has overcome everything thrown its way no problem. Doing so for almost twice the Merry's life on Sea.

When it comes to theory, equations, chemical engineering, biology, world knowledge, etc., Vegapunk is unrivaled.

I'd say Vegapunk is the far better scientist but Franky is the better engineer. Vegapunk's genius is unrivaled when it comes to imagine things and come up with revolutionary inventions, Franky's genius is unrivaled when it comes to concretely build them. So the way I see it, Franky can improve any Vegapunk creation, as the former is better at the practical part of the process while the latter is better at the theoritical part of the process. Also, don't forget Vegapunk has brilliant assistants that work with him, Franky is on his own.

VP is not Franky´s mentor, Tom is.
Most Strawhats have already surpassed their mentors a long time ago:
- Zeff spent one year in the Grandline and obviously did not get that far
-Zoro´s sensei is a small time dojo instructor and owner
- Nami technically does not have a mentor in her craft
- Usopp did not really have a mentor either. He has figures who have influenced him within the story though, but those relationships do not have a benchmark to surpass.
- Robin knows more about AK and blank century than any Oharan scholar
- Brook does not have a mentor, and in his craft is probably the best in the world.
- Fisher Tiger did not do anything towards improving the relationship between humans and fishmen.

So you have Tom-Franky, Shanks- Luffy and Kureha/Hiluluk-Chopper.

vegapunk is more versatile. and his pacifistas new models could each be on par with franky. and he can also make objects eat fruits and create artificial fruits.

franky studied young vegapunk's work, that is the level where he is.
