Thats fair, but from my perspective I had the "Oh this is a chosen one story" moment very early into the series.
People got mad at G5 reviving Luffy, personally I got just as pissed at Smoker literally having Luffy on an execution platform moments away from death only to conveniently be saved by his big shot dad. I expected something like Nika in Skypia, though I was expecting Luffy's chosen one status to be more like Dark Soul 1, where its a generic prophecy anyone like Joyboy could have filled. Garps reveal during Post Ennies Lobby basically cements the nepotism. Born of the worst criminal, grandson of the hero who caught roger, sworn brother of the pirate kings son and Revolutionaries No 2, VOA, Rogers spirtual successor, CoC, and his multiple miracles during Crocodile. Tbh, Nika just didn't feel all that different from the stuff he already had behind him imo. It also isn't that busted, it was called the most ridiculous power because of its wild and zany effects. Though I will admit it is just as busted as any other Mythical Zoan and that can ruin a bit of Luffy's initial creativity with the fruit for some. Personally I really like it because I thought explanations for stuff like G2/G3 were kinda dumb, but with G5s reality warping they make perfect sense and even turns those gears into unintentional foreshadowing.
I disagree that there is no price, Vegapunk died because Luffy wasn't serious enough in handling the threats. Oda seems to put extra effort into pointing out Luffy is having personality shifts during G5. It seems like a small thing for him to stall on answering who he is, but when asked Luffy *always* announces himself clearly "Monkey D. Luffy, future King of The Pirates!" especially to those testing him. Why else would Kaido even ask who he is? He's been fighting him the whole time!
tbh I feel Agenda's made me more aggressive here and has given a lot of the fandom a doomer perspective. But in my eyes Oda has finally gotten out of a whole saga of setup, and we're about to see all of its pay off. I'm finally going to see what that ludicriuosly prolonged meal prep was for.
Funny you mention G.R.R.M. kill counts, because I think Oda might actually pull the trigger during the final war. It would certainly give a lot of weight to many of the more incidental side characters if they died in the struggle...
