Character Discussion Is Luffy a good chosen one?

#1
I feel like out of all chosen one characters, Luffy is one of the least compelling. Usually, characters who are the chosen one struggle under the weight of this responsibility.

This goes as far back as the original chosen one, Jesus christ.

According to Christian theology, jesus is both fully god and fully human. Which is why despite having all these supernatural powers, you still see jesus struggle in his journey to fulfill the purpose his father has for him. I believe this is one of the reasons why the bible is such a compelling story and why christianity is such a popular religion. Despite Jesus being this all powerful entity, he has an element of human-ness to him that everyone can relate to.

.
Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”

Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”

Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” he asked Peter. “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.”

When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.

Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour has come, and the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”
I feel like more often than not, Luffy is fully god but not fully human. He gets multiple insane power ups every arc, he gets his ass beat profoundly and yet this never bothers him and only makes him stronger, everyone just automatically loves him and goes out of there way to help Luffy.

Apart from post marineford, you never see Luffy have conflicts with himself, and I think that that is the crucial element that keeps overpowered protagonists interesting.

thread could have do without with the tidbit of religious convo esp in the manga section tbh
we also see luffy struggle through his journey albeit not internally but externally with each villain that overwhelms him.
getting power ups and not cowering after defeat isn't quite the same as not struggling.

but I guess oda could do a better job of luffy's internal struggles
however the little bit we saw from sabadoy to post mf was so significant in his journey I doubt oda wants to make it a frequent thing.

Since 2019 I speculated he had to be related with JoyBoy and be a descendant of some sort and also symbolizing the Sun.

If that's so I don't know what they symbolize in Christianity but Luffy is all but evil overall.
Monkey D. Luffy

Vitamin D mainly comes from the SUN...

Anyway, to answer OP question, Luffy is a good chosen one because he also relies on others. Think Naruto and Sasuke, these chosen ones never needed Sakura's healing.

So I think Self Importance is the key here.

Basically, like Itachi said, you will think that as chosen ones, you can do everything yourself because everything you do will be blessed and helped by luck. You would think that everything will be smooth sailing.

While Luffy is massively helped by fate and destiny, Oda also makes him rely on others.

This is why as early as Arlong Park, Oda make Luffy gave that speech. Oda knows the flaw of chosen ones and remedy it sooner.

Luffy is a chosen one but he's still better than Naruto, Ichigo and Goku combined.
Waay better. Dragon Ball's story is simple Good vs Bad. Naruto tried to move away from good and bad but the core of the story revolved around it so there was no way out of it. One Piece is different the world the characters all represent different ideologies and beliefs. The Marines alone is one complicated ideas of different justices and moral codes and that is but 1 part of One Piece.

He’s less of an asshole than Goku, less whiny than Naruto, and less moody than Ichigo…but no, the story doesn’t benefit as much from building Luffy into a demigod as Oda seems to think.
Goku is not the chosen one.

One Piece is also good vs bad. Pirates and Marines MCs are always portrayed as the good ones while marines or pirates antagonists as bad ones.

This is not Attack on Titan
