Luffy has attributes that no other character in One Piece's world shared with:
  • Insane growth rate
  • Infinity willpower, which can imply infinity endurance
  • Crazy luck
These three attributes make Luffy invincible unlike other characters. For me, this makes his fight and his journey lack believability. It likes reading the story about a pro-player who wants to win the game but got cheat code.

For example, in pre-TS, Luffy still needs to come up with water tank or blood ideas to beat Crocodile. Now it always ends with:
  • Use infinity endurance/will power, become punching bag for a while, then suddenly copy skills from enemies
    • For me, this automatically destroys enemy hype and ruins OP world. It likes watching world-class chess player got beaten by a kid who don't know how to pay chess before, which is pathetic.
  • Use insane luck and turn the situation in favor.
    • Like turning prison into training ground with a perfect teacher who knows how to counter protagonist.
I think Zoro is the closest person who possess those attributes. However, he still has reality check. He is still getting defeated, admitted his limits, or needs to give up. This makes his journey to overcome Mihawk more believable and more attractive.

HAHAHA.....biggest joke....

Zoro went from Kamazou to Kaido...whereas Luffy had to overcome commander wall to even face Kaido.......you act like Luffy didn't have any L or did you chose to feign ignorance ?....did you skip chapter 923 and Udon where Luffy trained because whatever he had ain't enough for Kaido...did you forget that he had to ran away from Katakuri because he couldn't overcome FS and had to put himself in death to learn FS and overcome Katakuri....

Luffy trying to enter Laugh Tale once Oda finishes the job and gives him the ability to walk on water AND blow holes through people’s brains with nothing but air or whatever PIS-induced power up comes after all the others he’s either learning to hone or on track to unlock:

well that is a MC in shonen manga
but yeah he is special and so are all of the main characters.
that has to do with his haki in one piece. or at least that is how Oda will explain it: his haki is so powerful that it can change destiny of something like that. or as Hawkins said no matter what his surviving expectancy never come to zero.

BM's skin is impenetrable since birth. She is genetically natural born destroyer etc. Is this an outlier?

Imo Luffy is an outlier but only slightly. In my opinion, Luffy has extreme affinity in learning. He is so creative in finding the solution in combat, or at least Oda depicts him as such. Combine this with extreme willpower when the stakes are at play, and you get someone who will not stop evolving combat-wise.

Imo there is no one with this extent of learning ability in OP world. Maybe in that way, Luffy is an outlier. But that is the blessing of the MC. Moreover, Oda compensates by making Luffy constantly making mistakes during his battles and adventure. Being reckless, being boyish and childish, prone to ambush etc. Oda also make ladder steps to accomplish his power progression.

Doflamingo - Cracker - Enraged Army - Katakuri - Kaidou. Luffy has learning talent, picking things up from the enemy or surroundings and incorporate them into his own abilities, so you can see each fight as a life-and-death learning session for Luffy. By this, he builts himself up slowly but surely, becoming stronger and stronger.

If many other fighters get extremely powerful devil fruits and weapons from the get go (LIGHT AND GRAVITY DEVIL FRUIT ARE YOU KIDDING ME) other fighters get indestructible bodies from the start. Luffy catches up by learning everything he can. This is his boost.

But, Oda's portrayal of this is almost instantaneous since imo he lacks ability to portray Luffy's building up his thinking process, internal monologues, makes us feel Luffy's trial and error phases, and character progression depiction within the learning process (combat). Oda also chose to keep Luffy's brattish and reckless traits instead of a grown-up boy filled with wisdom from his experience. He still made mistakes everywhere and makes a fool outta himself and Oda chose to retain this trait completely, no strategizing or being creative when plot restrict him from it.

These two things resulted in "instant" vibes at each decisive combat moment. Imo Oda dont have the ability to depict the learning process properly, this is why Luffy's growth is often perceived as an asspull, even though Luffy had met bits and pieces he completed the puzzle of combat learning from. But boy if Oda learn this storytelling method, itll be glorious to portray char development. A manga with extremely good example of learning process is Vagabond. That is one masterpiece mofo of storytelling.

So on topic yeah imo Luffy is an outlier. But only slightly, and he is a somewhat realistic outlier, there are phases and methods to his progression even though he is still goofing around, a character trait which should change or mature sufficiently by now imo. And dont worry Oda makes everyone relevant into outliers by him wanting to hype everyone.

He does have insane growth rate but he isn't the only one here and he did train quite a lot with haki specialists. And he is the son and grand son of 2 of the strongest characters of the verse. Garp and Dragon were most likely already top tier in their 20's.

He has willpower since day 1, didn't stop him to get his ass kicked sometimes. What is bothering people is that now that he is stronger he can fight for a long period of time other strong characters and god forbides that. Only a few characters selected by the fandom should be able to do that:seriously::seriously:
He has to become a top tier at some point or we are going to get these same complaints in every fight till the end.

Regarding his luck, I don't find him particularly lucky. Well he is sometimes but in Wano for example I haven't really seen that luck.

Luffy is not the only one who has a plot armor , more every one who survives till the end, that applies for every strawhat. when it comes to plot armor power ups, then you can call Asura is the climax. but at the end i am pretty sure Oda can explain that with a special form of haki so let us quit saying this character has a plot armor, they all have.
but anyway that is how shonen manga is. main charcters get power ups , they get endurance.

Nah... What is bothering people is that he ruins the fights and turns them into jokes without any consequences.
Pulling stunts like GUTS! belongs in Looney Toons, not in One Piece...
Being knocked out clean by Ragnarok and stands up chapter and a half later as if nothing happened plus was enlightened during the KO.
Kaido, the strongest character with special body, with special Zoan, awakened recovery wont stand up that fast and that unaffected.
He has singlehandedly managed to turn this whole fight into a joke with 2 scenes.
