Controversial Is Roger A Fraud ?

#41
What makes Roger not a fraud is that, at the end of the day, his peers recognized him as the king of pirates.

Chinjao described it quite explicitly: the pirate king is the conqueror atop conquerors. Which is why Kaidou recognized him as the person who conquered the world with the strongest power; which is why Shiki described the incoming era as Whitebeard's only after Roger died; which is why Oden saw something different in Roger that set him apart from even Whitebeard; which is why Whitebeard himself spread Roger's will upon his own death...

Compare it to Rocks, who has been treated as a fool by both Big Mom and Whitebeard and was completely inept at ruling his "crew": that's the difference. To this day, Roger is respected and recognized as the pinnacle of piracy, and didn't even need a fancy title for it.

“P-please give me your poneglyph Linlin…”
“P-please give me your Oden Shirohige…”
Acquiring the resources to reach your objective does not make someone a fraud.

1) Not everything needs to be resolved through violence.

2) He needed Oden to read the Poneglyphs, and was humble enough to lower his head to his enemy to recruit him.

You guys really do live in this bubble where everything must be resolved with brute strength. You need to take a break from reading fantasy.

To be fair, it’s also partly Oda that presents it as a strength thing even though most readers can see that it’s not necessary at this point.

Fans may have come up with the ridiculous “Pirate King level” stuff, but it’s partly due to presentation.

Oda doesn't present it as a strength thing. It's a shonen, so obviously strength and power is going to play a role, but it has been made abundantly clear that strength alone was never enough for Roger to become Pirate King.

Garp even explicitly says during Luffy's flashback that it was because of how Roger lived his life, and had the luck to survive, that he became Pirate King. There was no mention of strength anywhere, and this came from Roger's biggest rival.

Yeah, Oda likes to emphasize strength because at the end of the day it is a shonen, and that stuff sells, but he explicitly went out of his way to write in the story over 10+ years ago that becoming Pirate King isn't solely strength related. He doesn't need to keep reinforcing something he's already told us. In fact he is showing us exactly what Garp said, all those years ago.

If Roger shows to be legitimately incapable of beating Xebecs alone it will be kinda cheating you know.

That would mean that he would never be PK as long as Xebec isn't ganked.

Not a fraud, but he will be lesser.
