I wanna say one of the most fascinating things about Elbaph's flashback is the insight into Monkey D. Dragon's personal narrative and one of the things that stand out whether a conscious effort on Oda's part is how Marine recruit Dragon sounds like Koby after he becomes a Marine. Particularly his inner monologue on swapping out live rounds for tranquilizer or saving Shanks and Sham's lives in honor of their mothers request.
If I were to "close my eyes" so to speak and read these panels again, they sound like Koby. Is anyone else picking up on that?
Better question is, could this mean Koby's paralleled Dragon and not Garp all along? Which Smoker has always been a better fit anyway, since he actively "hunts" Luffy and co. like Garp did Roger.
Koby is the if Monkey Dragon never rebelled for Garp's own piece of mind. Which is why I think Ace and Luffy becoming pirates instead of Marines really annoys him, he's actually broken from Dragon.
Hence why he doesn't hesitate when Koby got captured by Blackbeard. This was never about his grandsons. All roads lead back to Dragon.
