Character Discussion Is young Dragon projecting post trained by Garp Koby?

I wanna say one of the most fascinating things about Elbaph's flashback is the insight into Monkey D. Dragon's personal narrative and one of the things that stand out whether a conscious effort on Oda's part is how Marine recruit Dragon sounds like Koby after he becomes a Marine. Particularly his inner monologue on swapping out live rounds for tranquilizer or saving Shanks and Sham's lives in honor of their mothers request.

If I were to "close my eyes" so to speak and read these panels again, they sound like Koby. Is anyone else picking up on that?

Better question is, could this mean Koby's paralleled Dragon and not Garp all along? Which Smoker has always been a better fit anyway, since he actively "hunts" Luffy and co. like Garp did Roger.

Koby is the if Monkey Dragon never rebelled for Garp's own piece of mind. Which is why I think Ace and Luffy becoming pirates instead of Marines really annoys him, he's actually broken from Dragon.

Hence why he doesn't hesitate when Koby got captured by Blackbeard. This was never about his grandsons. All roads lead back to Dragon.

I actually really like this question, because when first seeing dragon in the God valley flashback, I was immediately reminded of Koby at marine ford. They act the same in the sense that Koby cried at Marineford for the war to stop because he could hear so many people dying, which reminds me of the similar reaction Dragon head seeing the killed slaves and also being afraid his whole platoon will be killed if he gets caught saving slaves. That inner conflict and distress I’ve seen from him I can only compare to Koby which makes me agree they might be paralleled.

I also used to consider dragon not having a DF back in the day, and if this turned out to be then that comparison would be stronger. Although, I do view Koby, Sabo and Luffy to be parallels of one another and dragon and Akainu to be polar opposites of one another (since they’re close in age).

I like the point you make about Garp not hesitating to save Koby, and I think Garp is really invested in wanting to have a bright future of the marines and Koby being a promising lead. He wants to build the marines off the backs of ‘good’ people so it’s likely he wanted to luffy and dragon to join for this purpose, because their ‘efforts’ would be better fitted there. It’s likely Garp desperately wants a prodigy and can’t get over his son not being that. So it appears he grew to love Koby and Kuzan due to their passion and shared belief, helping Garp loosen his grip with wanting his family to fit the marine mould. Hopefully when him and Dragon meet he can understand him and not be angry at his decision to leave, cuz I think he used to be angry at dragon because he views joining the revs as a ‘waste’ of good talent, and we see how desperate he is when preserving talent (like risking his life to save Koby).
