Characters don't need to have narrative connection between each other to justify fights. If they do, that's a good reason to have them, but not having them doesn't mean anything.

Sanji vs Jabra had no narrative connection
Franky vs Sasaki didn't either
Zoro vs Pica didn't either

There are plenty of examples of this. This has nothing to do with "writing"

It seems many people disagree with me.

Maybe I heavily emphasize on Zoro's declaration too much. He boldly announces in front of Samurais, Calamities, and Beast Pirate with earthquake foreshadowing.

But now he focuses on King where he made the announcement? If I were him, I would be very embarrassed and I would try to jump back to the roof to reclaim myself. But I am not Zoro. I may expect too much.

Like other people, I admit that the panels of him vs King is cool. But this doesn't help counter my argument.

Before
  • Zoro has declared a very clear objective to cut down Kaido
  • He sees Queen as a nobody
  • He ignored Luffy command and went straight to the roof to fight Kaido
  • He definitely has a better feat than Kids, Killer, and Law on the roof
  • No build up between Zoro and King
Now
  • Zoro focuses on fighting King
  • He seems to give up going back to Kaido
  • While, Kid & Law fight Big Mom
I think it would make sense if Zoro vs King before Kaido, which help him polish his skills or Enma.
But now, I don't see the point of him fighting King.

What do you think? see the poll.
Who says that he won't go back to Kaido after the fight with King? Even if the drugs side effects kick in, his will will provide him to move forward. It has been foreshadowed by Oda that ZKK will happen. And I firmly believe in that.

Actually its gonna be a good narrative if Zoro vs King is gonna be a swordsman vs someone not relying only on being a swordsman, meaning there's something for Zoro to learn about fighting an MMA fighter who used gadgets and swords and any method to win, in order to polish and shape Zoro's life perspective as a swordsman maybe more differently.

This is for me far better than ZKK since it's a pure powerlevel agenda which is maybe hinted by Oda, but feels out of place to me since ZKK is interfering with Luffy surpassing Kaidou as Luffy's stepping stone to be PK.

What will Zoro learn? He already said he will bite King if he needs to.

What will Zoro learn? He said he will bite if he needs to, so you mean that he have learn how to bite correctly in a swordsman fight? You might as well say theres no need for Zoro to fight King or even Kaidou since Zoro had mastered everything.

No there is no good narrative behind Zoro vs King. Which is sad but it is what it is:kayneshrug:
So you wanted Orochi?
Cause Zoro only started mentioning fighting kaido during the raid
Before that " I must avenge Yasu against Orochi " had build up up Orochi and his men.

Oda forced Zoro into Rooftop battle and now he's back to where he belonged against YCs

Narratively speaking and character wise Zoro vs Orochi made more sense and was more interesting than Zoro vs King.

At least if King was protecting Orochi from Zoro…

I support both. Zoro beat King in a super hard battle, then Injured Orochi (after against Scabbards back then) attack Zoro while became a true Yamata no Orochi with the size of a city and powerlevel hype about Orochi DF or something. Zoro use a new tech while enduring the drug's side effect that begin to kick in, and he kill Orochi.

I mean someone now has to fight king. Marco can't since he needs to recover and the alliance has no one else capable of beating him available. If Zoro just left to go rematch kaido then everyone on the live floor would die. Why would Zoro leave king to run wild killing ppl he cares about to go fight kaido who is being stalled by something? The immediate danger is king so that's who Zoro is fighting. Sure it had no set up but that's where the story is now. Even post fight Zoro can still help take out kaido if oda wants.
