shusui is great grade rn. So it was graded before turning black most likely.

Also, Sandai is one of the most iconic weapons in anime and very special to zoro. He will have it eos and beyond. There's a reason he did not upgrade to Nidai in wano.

Nice theory I had a similar thought on the possibility of that being necessary to making a black blade. Swords have personalities it’s up to a swordsman to tame that, once tamed if a swordsman/haki is pushed to its absolute limits where the sword will break and possibly even kill the user instead of shattering it turns black. Ryuma history of battle was was brought up in his forging a black blade and in the new ryuma one shot they gave him his black blade so it’s possible that when he was pushed to his absolute limits with his haki/swordsmanship fending off the wg from wano that is where he made his black blade and pushed them all back then the dragon slaying happened. So instead of shattering what if Sandai turns black raising rank to shusui possibly

The reason is Oda not wanting him to upgrade yet. Zoro had multiple scenes wanting to see or take Nidai, he just never got to do it.
