What made devil fruits special started fading the minute haki was introduced, but when Oda had Law completely cancel out Doc Q's disease fruit with haki alone, or when Joyboy's 800 year old haki rope cancelled out not just the Gorosei's powers but even their teleportation to Egghead as if they were never there, devil fruits just became painfully irrelevant, and Blackbeard's desire to collect them suddenly becomes pointless.
I personally wish haki had never been introduced. Devil Fruits already had nerfs in the form of seastone, the sea, and their individual weaknesses. That should've been enough.
