So I made a theory about Luffy's awakening way back during the days of Orojackson, and long before Luffy vs Katakuri ever took place, and with the time of Luffy awakening drawing ever closer, I figure I might as well redo the theory now that a lot of new information has slowly been coming to light.
So one thing a lot of people might have forgotten, or might not even know if they don't read a lot of the SBS, especially the ones from 20+ years ago, is that in SBS volume 8, a reader asked the question "Is Luffy made of Natural rubber, or artificial rubber." Oda's response to the question was that Luffy was in fact made of Natural Rubber. Here's the thing though, natural Rubber is more of a milky, liquid like substance. Essentially, Natural Rubber, would function more like a logia, like Katakuri's devil fruit does, rather than other paramecia's that we've seen in the series.
However, Luffy's Devil Fruit, as it stands right now, functions more like vulcanized/synthesized rubber. Oda has Luffy's devil fruit function the exact opposite, of what he told us Luffy was made of. This is extremely interesting, while at the same time, never made any sense when Oda first talked about it all those years ago, and didn't actually start to make sense, until he introduced the concept of awakening
Now there is many things we still don't know about awakening, and it varies from Devil Fruit to devil fruit, but there was an interesting thing Luffy said back on Dressrosa while fighting Doflamingo. He made the comment that when Doflamingo was using awakening, it's almost like he isn't even a paramecia. With that in mind, I made the assumption that it could be possible, that some awakenings actually change the class of the Devil Fruit users. In this instance with Luffy, who doesn't function like he hypothetically should, then his awakening would actually revert his body into is liquid like, Natural Rubber state. Luffy, would essentially, become more like a Logia, much like Katakuri's "Special Paramecia" devil fruit.
So how does this benefit Luffy? Well if you think about it, it benefits him greatly, because of his Gears (Mainly Gear 4). As it stands right now, Luffy has to burn through an obscene amount of Haki, just in order to be able to maintain his Gear 4 forms. This is a huge downside to his power, as it puts a cap on the amount of time he can fight in these forms.
This is where the fight with Katakuri comes into play. Now in the beginning of that we can saw that Katakuri was able to mimic Luffys G3, to a much greater extent than Luffy himself can pull it off. Katakuri did this, just by manipulating his Mochi at will, and even made a comment suggesting he could have made his version of "Elephant Gun" even bigger than he already did. Luffy on the otherhand, is once again capped, at just how large he can make his G3 fist.
But what if Luffy himself, could be able to manipulate his Rubber at will, much like Katakuri can do with his mochi? Luffy would be able to bend, mold, and shape his body into anything he wanted. He'd be able to go into Boundman form, without using the amount of Haki that it takes to hold the form together. He'd be able to switch from Boundman, to Snakeman, to Tankman, to G3, and back to regular size, on a dime, while at the same time, reserving his Haki for when it is absolutely needed. This would all be made possible, if Luffy's Devil Fruit, functioned like actual Natural Rubber, and the only way Luffy's Devil Fruit could ever function like it's supposed to, is via awakening.
Now I won't pretend to know where exactly Oda will take this, to make it an insanely OP awakening, but I do know that Natural Rubber is one of the most versatile substances in the World, and used in the production of 10's of thousands of products. The possibilities of where Oda can go with it are endless. But I think eliminating the drawbacks of G4 is a very good start, and anything after that, is a bonus.
