The moment Kiku lost an arm it removed all doubts for him dying. Especially in a Story that Oda writes. He never let any details go to waste. The wrap up story arc for Kiku is how does one keeps being a Swordman with one arm. If something to happen to Kiku its 100% happening after the Raid. And here we are.

As for the Emotional part. Well its pretty clear Oda wants us reader to not feel sorrow so he chose those two to die instead of anyone we are attached too. Why ? i assume because he wants to draw the biggest party yet.

Hahaha. Shanks has already lived 1052. If he is to die "as most are expecting" everyone will suggest losing his arm is the "reason". As for Kiku who knows but most likely will fade into the background.

Izo got to see his sister again, fight against his arch-enemy, aid Kaido's demise, and directly aided Luffy in becoming Joy Boy by stalling CP0.

For big moment yes Kiku dying would be better.

For plot I think the only survivals should be the ones who time travelled. Maybe just Kiku since Kin'nemon was the leader and Kanjuro the traitor.

Oda is scared to traumatize the kids by having an emotional death, because otherwise he’ll get sued by parents for having a “graphic” manga”. I now remembered Izo agreeing with Usopp when he said he didnt agree with the Samurai willingness to die for the mission by the way Izo was awesome,probably best design out of the Scabbards (probably because Oda designed it in a different period than the other Scabbards. Its possible in the beginning Izo was just a WB commander with no backstory)
