I think Tenguyama said that he made Sandai Kitetsu and Ame no Habakiri. The Shogun, a Kozuki was a blacksmith, it was his hobby according to him. And the other Kitetsu's were made by Sukiyaki's ancestors so Shodai and Nidai Kitetsu are creations of the Kozukis. It seems that the Kozuki's before becoming Shoguns were by trade blacksmiths creating the best swords and hence were chosen for making/crafting the Poneglyphs.

I know very little about Japanese culture and history but weren't classes like blacksmiths actually below Warriors/Samurais in the social order?

I heard that swordsmiths got a high social standing in Japan culture so I'm not actually sure if they were below Samurai in social standing.

Hmmm, but they are actually not the ruling/noble class either.

You are talking about blacksmith and samurai social status. Not weapons and poneglyphs.
