Current Events Law and Kid beating BM is the correct outcome, but it was terribly handled

#1
Many people want BM to survive and then return as the main antagonist in Elbaf. For narrative reasons it makes sense for only Luffy to defeat her, he even said after Kaido i'm coming for you. Here's why this would be a terrible idea:
  • It makes no sense for Oda to portray Law and Kid as Luffy's rivals and the new era, if in the end they don't archieve anything at the level of Luffy. If Luffy defeats all 4 emperors by himself, literally what is the point of them?
  • WCI started on fall 2016, that is more than 5 years we are with Big Mom. At this point many people(like me), are at the verge of getting sick of her. If we are getting 2-4 more years of BM, she will become the most hated character in OP, period.
  • BM being the main antagonist in Elbaf, would literally be Moria 2.0. I think everyone can agree that Kaido is a more formidable enemy than her. So no matter what Oda does, BM will feel underwhelming after beating Kaido and Elbaf would probably tank hard in sales.
  • After Luffy beats Kaido, he will have finally become a top tier pirate and fulfilled his promise to Shanks. After Wano it's time for SHANKS.
But many people are not statisfied with last chapter and rightfully so. The main reason being that Oda botched everything around this fight.

Here's what he should have done:
  • Give Kid and BM more narrative build up. The first time we get to see BM, we find out that Kid sank her ships, later at WCI we find out that he took down a commader. This should have been explored more. Give them more beef Oda!
  • Give the fight more pages= more moments of BM shining. A justified critisism of this fight is that all we see of BM is her being a punching bag. Kid and Law were supposed to be the underdogs this fight, but Oda is not showing us why. Many people are complaining about her not using adv CoC. WE DON'T EVEN KNOW IF SHE USED IT OR NOT BECAUSE WE DON'T GET SO SEE SHIT IN THIS FIGHT.
The best outcome for this fight is that BM demonstrates why she is BM, gets up after this attack. And then we get 1-2 more chapter of her vs Kid, in which both get to shine and we get a statisfying end to her.

Thoughts?

Your quote above sums it all up, nothing has a point anymore. Oda is in over his head right now with all these filler characters he created. He has no idea how to maneuver through this mess and often just leaps past all of the plotlines he used to build up these characters only to make Luffy and Co win because well that is what needs to happen.

Kid hurted a commander not took down anyone.

I agree that this fight was handled terribly. Doesn't matter the outcome. It lacks build up and the whole beginning of fight makes no sense because of that. Kid and Killer had no idea if Big Mom survived or not. They could just took the chance to 5v1 Kaido(or 4v1 since Luffy was already out like always) quickly before she cames back. Not only that Kid has personal things with Kaido that Oda built up during Wano arc. He doesn't have much with Big Mom.

I agree with all of these points. Oda is usually great at setting up the emotional and narrative stakes before the big fights, so it's strange that he didn't bother to give Law and Kid any narrative connection to Big Mom at all.

He's claimed that from the start of the series, the story was meant to focus on the Yonko (whatever that meant for him at the time) and that the Shichibukai were added later. Honestly? For a group of characters that have been supposedly part of the plan from the start, it really feels like he could've done way better than this.

I don't even hate the actual fight that we got. There's a lot of great moments in it, but I can't avoid feeling like there was so much missed potential in there. It didn't feel as satisfying as I know it could have been (but honestly, that's the same way I would describe this entire arc lol)

Bro stop, Luffy said that he's gonna fight Jack and Orochi as well, didn't happen. It was a figure of speech, whoever take down the big bosses of the arc takes the most credits. Since Kidd and Law are Luffy's allies, them defeating Big Mom is also an indirect of Luffy beating Big Mom. And in order for the Big Mom vs Kidd/Law fight to be better, Big Mom better not be down and let the narrative be focus on Kidd this time.
