It's the rules of trinity/trio used by Oda, and the best reference are Ace, Luffy, and Sabo.
One is always happy (Luffy).
One is always sad (Sabo).
One is in between (Ace).
Two people are closest to each other due to reasons such as rivalry, and one person is a total stranger but shares the same bond. In this case, Ace and Luffy are the closest because their parents/grandparents are rivals. Sabo is the stranger who has the same interest as the other two.
There is another example.
Happy: Loki
Sad: Kaido
Happy/Sad: Hajrudin
Loki and Hajrudin are the closest because they are half brothers, and Kaido is the stranger but has a similar appearance to Loki and Hajrudin's father.
Well, this rule does not always apply to every trio, and it depends on Oda's decision. For example, Garp/Roger/Xebec: Garp represents the good side, Roger represents the good/bad side, and Xebec represents the bad side. So it's not always fixed.
Back to this thread, I will say Teach and Buggy are the closest, and Kidd is the stranger who has the same interest. Technically Kidd is part of the trio.
