In Hindu tradition, it is known that not all living things are constituted by the same levels of life force energy. There is a specific word for the soul matter they refer to, but it is quantifiable.
I want to speak on the significance of large and small creatures in Hinduism. I feel that is has important connections to in-story elements that aren't very obvious, and need careful explanation to fully comprehend because it's based in esoterica.

The Significance of Animals in Hinduism

This essay is about how animals are treated in Hinduism and their importance in Hindu ritual and spiritual beliefs and practices.
Animals occupy an important place in Hinduism. Hindus firmly believe that animals possess souls and are in different states of physical and spiritual evolution. Like humans they too are made up of the same elements. However, in them the higher realities of Nature (tattvas) such as the senses, the mind, the ego and the intelligence, do not fully manifest. Hence, their knowledge, speech, intelligence, and mental skills remain limited.

Zunisha and the Sea Kings are Highly Evolved
The fact that Zunisha and the Sea Kings can use telepathic forms of communication with people like Momonosuke, and Princess Shirahoshi means that they are highly evolved. This is important because in Hinduism, the more something evolves the closer it gets to becoming a Godlike entity. In fact, humans are one step below achieving that while all the other animals are one step below humans. The most evolved animal besides humans are elephants, and the Hindus believe that elephants are to be highly regarded for this. They are capable of using the higher realities of nature and manifesting them as such things as senses.
The telepathic ability they use to communicate is one form of that. The fact that they respond to certain other people means that those special people are also highly evolved to the point where they can perform things like telepathy or at least they have the dormant power to do so within them.
On the other hand, if a living thing is small, then it has less life force energy, and it is less evolved. If something is small enough, it isn't even considered to have a soul anymore. Like a Paramecia. Such a small organism would not be considered to have a soul (think single celled organisms vs. multicellular organisms).
