Think the premise is pretty likely aside from bm being defeated, more likely imho she attempted to conquer elbaph but the giants were able to resist and send her back.
bm viewed an alliance with the giants as a complete game-changer against the other yonko crews, one that would have changed her trajectory as a pirate completely. So much so that she disowned her daughter and remained bitter a decade later. There's no way to reconcile that other than the giants being a force powerful enough to put a dent in a yonko crew. And a likely conclusion is that bm learned this the hard way.

Loki beating Big mom can't be happening. No Yonko(after becoming a Yonko) gets defeated in the past or wage serious war with anyone, that's why they continue to reign supreme in a neutral state for several decades forming balance in the New world.
