Questions & Mysteries Luffy’s devil fruit is called Sun God Nika - Why though?

#22
It's symbolism.

Nika is a liberator. A bringer of Dawn.

"Dawn suggests the notions of illumination and hope, the beginning of a new day and thus a chance for happiness and improvement "
"The dawn represents a fresh start and the possibility of a new beginning after a period of darkness. "
"The dawn may symbolize a fresh start, opening to a promise-filled future. "

The Sun brings the Dawn, thus, Nika = Sun God.

Uh huh Usopps drumming and a silhouette of Luffy doesn’t mean shit. Please show me anywhere that hinted to Nikas existence before the sudden implementation in wano. Hell we’ve seen that kuma worships him and we didn’t hear shit about that from him before or anyone.

It was a retcon
There was literally a "sun god" in Skypiea blud, and they danced with the same drum sound than the drums of liberation.

1. Oda reacting to this SBS talking about the Nikyu (Nika) fruit is hella sus

2. Oda picked the most ridiculous ability to Luffy

3. Oda purposedly putting Nika on Luffy in the cover of volume 62, they are not in order

4. Skypiea and the sun god

5. Luffy got happier after eating the fruit and started laughing with "Nika" kanji

Evolution of Luffy's laugh. Luffy smiles a lot but the SFX actually evolves over time. During chapter 1, it went from Haaaa (はーっ) to Shishishishi (しししし) pre-devil fruit to Nihi (にひ) post devil fruit, then to Ni (にっ) post his growth.

Luffy smiles with Nii (にいっ) during significant moments

Oda's wordplay on Nii (にいっ) actually symbolizes Nika (にか)?

Because Oda likes wordplay, what if you put っon top of い to get か. Suddenly Nii (にいっ) becomes Nika (にか)!? It definitely feels like Devi's fruit meaningfully changed Luffy's smile and Nika side of Luffy started to show more, especially during moments of significance. Ok, I know this still feels like a stretch to say that Oda planned for Nika since the beginning. but, wait, there's more.

Nika and Luffy's birthday (5/5). It's pretty well-known that Oda likes Japanese number based puns, which is why Nami's birthday is 7/3 (Na = 7 and Mi = 3) or Sanji's birthday is 3/2 (San=3 and Ji = 2). So why is Luffy's birthday 5/5 (SBS from chapter 130)? A lot of people were puzzled at the time. Shouldn't it be 5/6 since he's Gomu-gomu (Go=5 and Mu=6)? Yes yes, 5/5 is the official Japanese Children's Day and Luffy's like a child (and Usopp's birthday is 4/1 so that could make sense), BUT in retrospect, 5/5 is also 五/五 (remember, Japanese uses Chinese characters also) and as many Japanese readers have been pointing out, 五 is actually what you get if you put ニ and カ right on top of each other. So Luffy's birthday is Nika-Nika. Just to make this point a bit more convincing, remember Rodger's bounty is 5,564,800,000 bellies, which is 55億6480万. 6480 is a pretty straightforward wordplay on Rodger or ロジャー (ロ = 6, ジ = 4, ャ = 8), but why 55, when any number would do?? Because it's also for 五/五 or Nika Nika.

6. Drums of liberation before Wano are tied with "JoyBoy" (real reference Oda used)

Drum of Liberation sfx Don-do-tto-tto ( ドンドットット" )

7. Luffy had "cartoon effects" since he ate the fruit

For the same reason that the other 3 gods mentioned in skypeia are called: gods of the rain, earth and forest.

Because Oda had to find a way to tie some mythological figure to our rubber protagonist to allow for the Gear 5 power up.

Since no existing figure could fit Luffy’s power set up till now, Oda had to create his own figure to do so. With the theme of “bringing the dawn,” a sun god was best fit.
It still doesn’t match up retroactively, but that’s just the nature of a retcon.

Retcon

He didn't have to make gum gum fruit be mythical fruit of Nika
He could have just said "luffy is like nika" the same way he's called seen as new joyboy or roger before awakening, by many people

Oda want to retcon Luffy's fruit to asspull his way over Kaido, accidentally glimpse back Skypedia so he asspulled the whole Nika Goofy lore by making a fodder Who's who rambling a whole long ass speech about it in middle of his fight like a retard, then got no diff and got thrown away from the story like a trash.

It is not that Luffy will get fire attacks /attack names related to the sun or stuff like this. It is just that Oda played forever with the sun and moon symbolism and now there is Luffy who represents the sun / the dawn while BB will eventually get his mythical moon df awakened and become the moon god, a being of darkness or total blackness (he already is with the yami) opposed to Luffy.
