Yep, that's the first tip you give to any Dungeon Master, here in the forum would be the Host

you need to have a talk to your players and figure out the type of D&D they like

some people are really into the RP, character and telling a story

other people are really into the strategic combat of D&D and surviving a hard dungeon crawl with limited resources

some people just love exploring a lost ruin, using the abilities of the characters to navigate and reveal it's secrets

and some people love the mix of it all

I do think that for forum play the dungeon exploration and combat works the best, especially if you do longer rounds like Mafia and give time for the Host to work out all the actions

I think the RP / Character / Social Interactions would be a bit slow and not work as great as if you were in person or playing using voice chat at least
