Thats sadly not how Great power politics works. The US can swing its dick around and everyone has to shut up because the US has the biggest dick. When you're a Hegemon, you can do shit that weaker powers dislike, and they can't do shit about it. The US would find an excuse and invade Canada if that ever happened. Great Powers draw their lines of influence. NATO(The US) is trying to step into the last line that russia has in its waning power, so russia would naturally react with aggression.

The fact that NATO exists even now shows that its merely a vehicle for Western imperialism. NATO has never been useful even during the Cold War.

Also would like to add that the concept of "empire" has long been THE IDENTITY of russia long before its modern borders were drawn. Even as far as the rurik dynasty and the Kieven rus, there is no russia without empire. Thats why modern russia has an identity crisis because the nation itself has been defined by imperialism so in the modern day when imperialism is harder to do, they don't know what to do with themselves.

Imperialism and empire to russia is what Apple Pie and Slavery is to the United States.

Present day Mongolia is China's product and assimilated with Chinese and it's empires, they've lost connection with other Mongols(or Turkic) that invaded other lands and assimilated with local tribes
