The Road To Harmony
I've been getting my nephew into One Piece, and he finally made it past Enies Lobby. He friggin adores Luffy. He loves that Luffy isn't overpowered out of the gate and how nothing seems to get to him. He thinks it's cool that Luffy is essentially living the dream, and doing what he wants, sticking it to the "man," as he says. It actually reminded me why One Piece may be so popular in Japan. The country is governed by tradition and policy, some having to work endless hours and never visiting their families, which is part of why so many shonen manga have the absent father, a reflection of their society.

Luffy and his story are a counter culture to Japan's rigidness, further personified by his fruit. You shouldn't be afraid to do what you want. Luffy is also honest about who he is to a fault. A reminder to open yourself up to others.

Youth groups, especially those during the 60s and 70s, might also be part of what inspires the Straw Hats, and why its core members are all young adults. They are all setting out to sea to fulfill their hopes and dreams, not letting anything tell them

He's only 10, but he is really good at character understanding, and loves to read novels. For reference, he has watched a few anime, but none of his favorites were the main character, usually it was the villain. Of course, he loves Luffy for the obvious stuff. Great fights, guts, and a likeable personality. But the fact Luffy stands out to him, and for such strong reasons, speaks to the strength of writing that went into his conception. He's deceptively simple, but he defines and informs his story in a way not many shonen manga protagonists do.

One of the best thing about Luffy’s character is his genuine spontaneity. One of the recent moment was when he asked Momo to bite Kaido, that was hilarious. These spontaneous Luffy moments are serotonin boosting. I remember Oda himself once said that sometimes even he does not what Luffy is gonna do next. Luffy in true sense moves the plot of one piece.

Lol, how confident are you that Oda isn't going to make him get fodderize by some unknown fodder in the next arc after all possible stuff he can do (if Oda is saying true about paying attention to Luffy) ?
Lolol not confident at all actually since thats just how Oda writes Luffy, Oda portray Luffy solidly still as a careless boy who makes mistakes all the time (if theres no stakes involved) even after all this time, then it cant be helped. The only way Oda wont do it is that if Oda want to change how Luffy being portrayed as a character, which is slim chance.

Recently I have been reading a lot of threads criticizing Luffy for being a child of destiny or pirate Jesus. There have been times I have felt Luffy fatigue, but he is still one of my favorite characters and continues to remain so.

Oda established Luffy as someone special from the get go. I view Luffy as a DC character or demigod type figure as compared to a Marvel character, where the focus is on an ordinary person trying to adjust to their powers. Early on in the series, Luffy is seen as a gifted fighter. In EB he already has a variety of moves and techniques regarding his devil fruit. Luffy doesn’t question his goal, motives, powers, dreams, or ideals. He already knows who he is and expresses himself without any shame. He is a character that inspires others to be the best version of themselves.

Also Oda started hinting that Luffy was special and destined for something great once Shanks gave him the hat. The point was strengthened even more once Buggy revealed that he and Shanks were cabin boys on Gol D. Roger’s ship. Then throughout the manga we learn more and more about Luffy’s past and family. Finally, I think people need to realize that Oda never tried to hide the fact that Luffy was special and destined for greatness.

There are only people who complains about this

1) Anti Luffy squad: this squad always criticizes Luffy irrespective of good or bad feats from him. Trying to convince these people is waste of time. Ironically 80% of these are from zoro fandom.

2) Anti one piece squad: These people are on the revenge quest against one piece fandom because their favorite anime/manga sucks for some people from the one piece fandom. Some of them are so called "seinen" or "mature" buffs or they pretend to be. Infact you won't find an ounce of matured constructive posts from these people. If you counter them with reasoning, they will call you Oda dickriders blah blah.

3) Used to like Luffy not anymore squad: These are the worst actually. They overthink and try to justify their hate towards Luffy by inserting their own non existent head canon. They say they hate Luffy because he was not like he was in pre TS and at the same time they say Luffy didn't change at all. How contradictory? They don't like Luffy whether it is post TS or pre TS but they pretend for some reason.

Luffy definitely suffered post TS but that is from his fighting techniques. He was made fool out by way weaker people than him and that is what denting his achievements. Oda creating unnecessary drama like G4 time limit in dressrosa, fainted to Apoo, outsmarted by Monet to meet momo etc. And Luffy was mellowed down post TS whereas he is more savage pre TS. His g2 and g3 became completely useless prior to adCoC.
