By that I mean, I have no objections to you guys doing whatever you please, until it crosses into hurting the town. At that point I then have an issue trusting that your motives are in the right place.

Well now consider his perspective. He sees something he doesn't fully trust and when he pokes there he gets significant blowback in an attempt to get him to stop talking about it - it's only really natural that that would further his suspicions. This is why dialogue is so important.
