Naruto’s growth during the TS was really underwhelming. It’s weird that Jiraiya didn’t even try to teach him the basics of nature transformation, which is a pretty fundamental skill. It would’ve been cool if Naruto had some low/mid level wind style jutsus in his arsenal prior to learning Rasenshuriken, that way his fighting style could be more versatile

More I get older in life, more I become both disappointed in Jiraiya and understand him at the same time. Naruto severely lacked the fundamentals, heck he did not know the meaning of chakra when he started training with Team 7. That is like the first thing taught in Academy. He did not know anything about Ninjutsu, Genjutsu or Taijutsu, his only tactic was to rush at everything, spam gajillion clones and hope Kurama gives him some chakra to finish the job. The material at hand was a total zero, a talented and hardworking one, but a zero regardless. Jiraiya probably thought that if he taught him the fundamental stuff and refined his already existing skills, he could pull him from zero to at least something. Then, through further training by himself and through Kakashi, he would figure out more advanced stuff quickly later on, which turned out to be true. What Naruto needed at that moment was not advanced training, it was learning fundamental stuff, maturing and developing parental bonds with someone.
People do underestimate the importance of maturing correctly in this series. Look at what happened to Obito, an orphan thrown into the battlefield at the middle of the war, permanently scarred and was dealt a very bad hand with parental/savior figure of Madara. Look at what happened to Kabuto, before maturing properly, he was taken away from his family, used as a spy traveling across the world without anyone or anything and thrown away like a guinea pig once they were done with him.
Yeah, Kishi just didn’t introduce it early enough. Kinda fucks with Kakuzu too ngl. He’s made out to be insanely strong because all of his nature elements, but come the 4th databook, a majority of characters his tier nearly match his elemental range without needing forbidden Jutsu.
I think it’s a concept Kishi wasn’t sure on until a certain point — tho he also did not care much for it after that arc either. We have segments where the elemental relationships matter (Danzo fight, Sasuke fight v. Naruto, etc) but it really doesn’t get exploited much down the road.

Sasuke during the TS: Mastered his sharingan, learned to fight with a Katana, improved his shuriken skills to a point where he could compete with Itachi, developed many variations of Lightning/Fire style, learned to casually put someone on a genjutsu, mastered his cursed seal, created fucking KIRIN and got strong/fast enough to tango with Kage level characters and even beat a couple of them(Orochimaru,Deidara and Itachi). Dude went from Gennin to solid Kage level.
Naruto: Fucked around with Jiraya. Learned a new rasengan type. Got a bit better in Taijutsu. Learned to get out of a Genjutsu(partially). Learned to unleash a bit of the nine tails chackra. Gets no diffed by Sasuke in early shippuden.
Orochimaru>>Jiraya when it comes to mentoring. Well, Sasuke has merit in this too, since he is a genius. Naruto never learning some wind jutsu in the early game was just stupid. It made him look one dimensional and boring. Narutos fights were just kage bunshin and rasengan.

It seems Kishi rushed that arc. Hidan was supposed to be able to have lots of tricks with that big ass Scythe and Kakuzu would last a few more chapters before going down.

I agree, but for a hyped sannin. Jiraya should have perfomed better. The man tried to teach Naruto to tame the fucking Nine tails instead of teaching him basic nature manipulation. This is a crime.

I mean, not even Sasuke, look at Sakura lol. Tsunade took her from literally zero combat skills to a very capable low jonin kunoichi level in a span of 2 years. She mastered medical ninjutsu and taijutsu. She jumped from being the weakest of Konoha 12 to the undisputable 3rd strongest and after Naruto and Sasuke, she is a solid Mid-High Kage level fighter by the end of Shippuden. Jiraiya could have done way more considering the amount of progress Sasuke and Sakura did show but I also appreciate him for helping Naruto mature both as a human being and as a Ninja.

Jiraiya is a shit teacher plain and simple, even for the Rasengan, 99% of it was just Naruto brute forcing it without understanding what he was actually doing because Jiraiya just left him with almost no guidance.
