Shueisha must be fuming after they forcibly try to shove OP merch/promotion everywhere in Japan and it still can lose in sales sometimes.
One Piece sales were never amazing to me from a worldwide perspective. 500m copies sold 80% in Japan
Naruto, Bleach, and Dragon Ball have more clout overseas and they didn't sell many copies. Why? Cause it was fun.
To this day I haven't met a manga/anime guy who told me that One Piece made his childhood.

Growing up you never heard about One Piece unless you somehow got into it. Naruto, DB, Bleach. Bleach less than DB and Naruto but everyone knew what they are.
2018- now is social media era at its peak and that's where OP gets the most hype from. Prior to that no one heard about OP.
Right now OP is everywhere but that's becuase of Shueisha's campaign.
