Character Discussion Oda downplayed Roger

#1
Gol D. Roger was hyped as the King of Pirates who achieved everything in this world, yet his role in One Piece is, in fact, smaller than originally suggested.
One Piece is not Roger himself; he only discovered that treasure and made it widely known. He hyped Joy Boy's treasure.
For me, this is a huge loss for Roger. It would have been better if he had discovered the history of the ancient kingdom and created One Piece as a way to restore the balance to the world. In this way, Roger would have maintained his achievements and deserved his hype and glory.

Gol D. Roger is a fraud.

I mean, its was always a big loophole in Oda's writing. You have the ancient kingdom and all of these ancient things (true history, ancient weapons, etc), it would be weird of One Piece wasnt something ancient too.

To be fair, Roger did put all of the Rio Poneglyphs together (or so we think). They were not on Laugh Tale originally. This means all Robin really needs to do is read all 9 of them in front of the crew.

Oda dehyps everyone and everything

Luffy being some prophesied hero cheapens his character, especially with gomu being special mythical zoan fruit

Roger became...normal great pirate who got lucky

Etc...

It's probably only like 50 people knowing about the poneglyphs, let alone the road poneglyphs and joyboy.

It's reasonable that he just went viral for being involved in big events, hiding a treasure somewhere and telling the world about it right before his death.

Just like advCoC users pop out one after the other. People tend to think it's very common. But it's not, where just playing in the top leagues. Feats and knowledge we see is not publicly known or understood.

Headcannon.

One Piece is what people called his treasure to be after becoming King of Pirates

Is not what he discovered at Laugh Tale but everything he gained as a pirate.

I agree that Oda downplayed him and that what he did is much less than what his legend suggests(maybe Oda wanted to be like that?) but you are giving the wrong reasons for that.

Roger did discover the ancient history. He discovered the treasure of JoyBoy and he did create the One Piece.

Remember that One Piece aint related to the ancient Kingdom. One Piece is the name given by the people to all the treasures of Roger, he didnt name it, it was the people just as they named him King Of Pirates.

It is Roger who fooled the people to find his treasure and he left it on the last island so they could find the ancient history and Joyboys treasure.

So no, he aint a failure.
