Oda did the same for Luffy his fight against hordy, instead if using Gear 4 and nuetralizing hordy, he had Luffy lose 3 times almost dying.

Luffy also almost died against Ceaser 3 times, not taking the fight serious.

Luffy never used King kong Gun against Cracker.
