He should but he won’t.

He also should have left Luffy as “dead” for a good ten chapters way back when Kaido tossed him off the island and then had him return on the back of a gigantic dragon as a big cliffhanger. Fill in the gaps later as a flashback.

Instead we already know the same chapter Luffy was defeated that he’s coming back.

Now, obviously, we all know that Luffy will come back and win eventually, but Oda could do a lot more to keep the tension and excitement higher. Think back to Alabasta where he was willing to keep Luffy out of the action for like fifteen chapters and let the other fights finish without him.

Although even there he had Robin save Luffy like the chapter after he was defeated by Croc instead of leaving his fate unknown for long. So it’s not like this problem is totally unique to modern Oda.

Honestly, that's my only criticism of this chapter.

I would've loved if those last 2 pages with Zuneshia and Luffy came like 2 chapters later.

However it's in line with what Oda has been doing this arc, introduce even the slightest bit of tension only to immediately snuff it out either that same chapter or the very next chapter.

No, that means you want to prolong this arc more...

Also it's Luffy who got knocked out/died and we know he is going to be back again, no point to make it more intense IMO

I guess it wasn't Oda decision but his editors right? They are the ones who decide which panel will go on a chapter, aren't they?

But I was about to make the same thread. People saying this chapter is top chapter of One Piece but in reallity sucks because killed all the build up tension 90% of the chapter had.
