Character Discussion Oda should have preserved Luffy's originality

Do you think this is Oda's mistake

Luffy used to be portrayed as an underdog who has the creative way to utilize his relatively weak devil fruit.
Many time, he came up with strategy to counter opponents, which make it fun.
He sometimes foreshadow Roger, but this happens rarely.

However, Luffy has turned into someone who:
  • Foreshadow tons of legendaries. He is portrayed as new Joy Boy, new Roger, new Nika, new kind of god, whatever...
  • Crazy lineage with Dragon's and Garp's blood. I predict Luffy's mom will be even crazier
  • Instead of being creative, he now counters opponents by copying their skills on-the-fly
  • Many of his new abilities has nothing to do with his fruit. Instead many are more like chosen one's abilities. E.g. telepathy, future reading, advCOC, and potentially being able to control Zunisha
  • His devil fruit might turn out to be the GOAT or some kind of forbidden fruit
  • He could now turn everyone into allies on-a-whim without any effort
In my opinion, this new Luffy is really opposite from Luffy in early day, who is goofy and funny, but being able to won people heart through relationship's development.

Do you think this is Oda's mistake? Which Luffy do you prefer?

Technically, post-timeskip Luffy has been underutilized, not that his character got ruined because of those foreshadowing of legendary figures like Joyboy, Roger, Nika, etc.

Luffy still does use strategies post-timeskip like against Yeti Cool Bros for example but not as much as pre-timeskip since Haki took over as one of the major fighting arsenal. And this is Shounen so the representation of Luffy being the new gen of this X characters is expected.

And Luffy's ability to turn other people into allies or should I say, charisma is highlighted by Mihawk pre-timeskip so it's also there. It's just that pre-timeskip Luffy is more matured and straightforward.

There is a limit to what he can do. It was a "must" to learn what top tiers have so he can be a top tier.

Besides, Oda gave him the basics of everything, basic hakis. So an upgrade to this abilities are justified.

But about his personality, I like much more pre time skip

Oda just added haki and its advanced forms...which will enable them to do something which was not possible... it's just has become his excuse to be lazy with fights now...I feel now he thinks about what cool attack name should I think of...and then draws it.

Yes, and not just Luffy. He didn't need to make Sanji a noble and give him special powers and he didn't need to make Zoro a Shimotsuki and give him special powers either.

In the end One Peice makes you a dreamer but they only fulfill their dreams because they were born blessed.
I guess people are so much dumb now a days. They fulfill their dreams because they are trying to fulfill their dreams. I am blessed with all body parts but if I don't work for my goals, I am useless as fuck. Simple logic and braindead people simple throw muddy water on action by saying that he is blessed. So easy to put down because others can't achieve it.

New Luffy? You mean the Luffy we’ve had for like 15 years?

Luffy’s had a lot of these going for him since the preTS

The enemy to allies thing was confirmed by Mihawk during Marineford, Luffy was confirmed to be related to Garp and Dragon during Water 7/Enies Lobby, Luffy has had parallels with Roger since forever, etc

He hasn’t been an underdog since chapter 1. He’s had superhuman strength, endurance and will since pretty much the beginning of the series. The only thing he didn’t have was a strong crew and a good ship

Did y’all want Luffy to be nothing to top tiers forever?

That is your view of being ignorant. I don't deny that luck is a key factor in absolute success because that's what the data proves.

I just think One Piece could be different for something for kids. It would be much more motivating for a child to see that they can fulfill their dream by working hard despite coming out of nowhere.

Instead, she becomes a dreamer like Luffy and Zoro, but later ends up seeing that they only made their dreams come true because in addition to a lot of work, they were luckier than the others. I know that's the reality, but I think it's demotivating for a kid.
