When they return from timeskip,
There was hope that Ussop isn't a coward ANYMORE, Zoro would be much alive as a character as he was during pre ts, Sanji wouldn't be into an overly used gag, Luffy actually learned from Ace death,...

But then Oda decided to revert them back to pre ts versions and ruined them more
Instead of making :
  • Luffy not rush into battles or scenes prematurely. Luffy being a competent leader . Oh yeah PLEASE ERASE G5 !
  • Zoro being involved much in plots which actually pays off, not just a fanservice battle maniac freak.
  • Ussop be brave as a fighter. He may act a bit coward to fool the enemies but then gets serious to beat them with combat skills.
  • Sanji drop the exaggerated gags and not be hypetool . Nor cry wirh snorts for help like some weakling even if it's a woman who's holding him.
  • Nami be a competent woman who's not just a damsel that cries for help every single arc since TS
  • Robin to be present in plots not to drop few informative lines once every 100 chapters. Let Robin be seen as she was during pre ts cause nowadays she feels like a background character who doesn't even unveil secrets anymore.
  • Chopper be a serious combatant and chatacter again cause Oda admitted he turned him into a mascot for sales.
Only Brook hasn't regressed and didn't get ruined as a character.

Look at the start Elbaf arc wher3 we're 1200 chapters into One Piece and yet Ussop is still a coward weakling and I bet he won't ever change !

Ask people why do you think SHs made progress as characters, they'll only mention how Luffy became Yonko, Zoro is almost there to be WSS,...
All about achievements of their goals and zero positive characterisation progression
In fact, Oda also failed to properly develop their goals since TS

If you haven't realized how important their goals are to them and how they go hand in hand with their character development then you're a lost cause.

I think one piece's characters do grow. They slowly grow in friendship and trust towards each other. Take Naomi for instance. At first, she is afraid to trust Luffy and betrayed the crew rather than trust them. But now, she trust Luffy and I don't think she will likely betray the crew again.

Yes, some of their characters remain the same... Ussop being a coward, for instance, but they do develop and grow as characters. Also, wouldn't it be more likely for a coward to remain a coward, but gradually trust his friends more rather than him suddenly not being a coward just because of some... time skip?
