Nika wasn't just some random god. He was the leader of the Lunarians. The lunarians lived ontop of the grandline so their is no force to naturally worship other than the sun(stars). Of course since prehistoric times the lunarians could literally set themselves on fire so praising a sun God makes sense.
Living ontop of the world you would have no enemies and if anybody ever did oppose you they would have to climb a wall like 30 k feet in the air just to face 7 +feet tall giants with wings and dark skin. The fact that whitebeard heard about God's living up in the sky was before the void century so the 100 years missing from history would have been the 23 noble kings from around the world attacking a weakened lunarian base.
Why were the lunarians weakened?, because their leader joyboy was an adventurer who wanted to explore the world below and while he was on laughtale his people were eradicated for the most part. I mean think about it Nika could literally warp reality and throw lightning down at any titan threatening to climb Olympus(I mean the redline).
