The story of One Piece shares some similarity with the story of the story of The Mysterios Cities of Gold. One Piece is much grander version of the other story to say the least. The original story has nothing in comparision to one piece in terms of character depth, world building, and power levels. However, if we do character comaprisons from the two stories TMCG has only three main characters Esteban, Zia, and Tao. Their somewhat equivalents in One Piece can be Luffy, Robin, and Sanji.
Esteban wears one of the two sun medallions. He dreams of adventure and is very impulsive. People of Barcelona believe him to be the "Child of the Sun". He joins the Spaniards in their search for one of The Seven Cities of Gold in the New World, hoping to find his father. Upon meeting a friend of his father in China, Esteban is revealed to be a descendant of the civilization of Atlantis, the ancient enemy of the Mu (Hiva) empire.
Zia is the daughter of an Incan high priest. She met Esteban when she was taken by Governor Pizarro who wanted her to read the golden Quipu. Zia wears a sun medallion like Esteban's, with an interlocking sun and moon disc.
Tao is the last living descendant of the sunken empire of Mu or Hiva. Tao is the brains of the group, he carries an encyclopedia which has the knowledge of the Hiva people. He like to plan what to do before hand and doesn't like esteban jump in and think what to do later' way of thinking, but he follows him anyway.
The Solaris is an ancient ship built by the Hiva/Mu people. It uses solar energy to power its oars. It can reflect concentrated sunlight to burn enemy ships and can even self-destruct.
Interesting thing is if Oda took any inspiration from this story, the ancestors of Luffy and Sanji will be enemies. Also, there seems to be no equivalent of any other straw hat in the TMCG story.
