This isn't necessarily a defense of Oda, as my mindset is way different then his, but he does seem to lean pretty heavily into that Japanese style of philosophy of sacrificing yourself to help others thing, where we, being more American/European, tend for more pragmatic ideas.
Like, the thing with Oden, I'm sure Oda was trying to paint it as "He is nobly sacrificing his honor to save innocents", but pretty much all the Western fans like us are like "Yo, just bust out the hostages and fight Kaido, you dumbass".
