I don't think it's impossible BB is a different race, but I think he is a Buccaneer specifically because his body is special, and that bit of information was revealed in the same arc we learned more of the Buccaneers.

imo Buccaneers and their special ability is tied to the origin of Devil Fruits.

I believe all or some of them have the ability to convert emotions - i.e. Power of Love - into special abilities, and in the case of BB, who is a "traitor" among the D Clan, has an ability with a horrible downside of making it impossible for him to sleep. I also think Sanji has Buccaneer DNA either through his mother - which would explain why Judge married her - or it's a component of the genetic modifications that his siblings don't have access to due to the side effects preventing them from feeling much in the way of emotion.
