I feel like it can be remote, but definitely short range. Like maybe not physically touch, but close enough that Sommers would need to see and manipulate the thorns himself.

And tbh this is the perfect chance for colon to get caught. Have the SHs job to the HKs, have Colon say he refuses to lose because he’s the son of Gaban, then the HKs decide to use him as a hostage.
