Kaido saw promise in King, that's why he wanted him to be his right hand man. King went on to become stronger but clearly not strong enough for Kaido's ambitions. Maybe if he didn't look at swordsmanship as simply a tool in the toolbox he likes, and actually put the effort in to master it, he would've beat Zoro.
But he relied too much on his inherent abilities. That's his weakness. Talent that works hard (zoro) beats talent (king)
