Dragon could have tried to change the Marines from the inside.

Dragon and Akainu have clear bad blood.

Making Akainu's actions on Ohara was the full breaking point for Dragon? His own friends, Akainu and Aokiji, justifying the results would be enough to push Dragon over the edge, IMO.

Maybe Dragon served under Garp, until Ohara, then finally was fed up? Awesome catch.
