It’s not really a D thing, it’s most flashback characters go out with a smile as a last show of defiance. Bellemere, Hiriluk, Oden, Brook’s crew are all non D’s who did the same, while Law’s family were certainly not smiling, and I doubt Clover and his brother was either.

If Xebec manages to pull himself out of the Domi Reversi and get a moral victory over Imu, he’ll die smiling. If he’s too go out in bad circumstances to set up Blackbeard’s rise to villainy, he won’t.

I can't believe this chapter is not unanimously a 5. This was an amazing chapter with one of the most beautiful double page of the entire manga with an amazing setup and beautiful twist and turns. I'm carefully weighting my words when I say that there is a big problem here.

The only thing scary about Domi Reversi is if Akainu manages to utilize it. I agree this prospect sent a shiver down my spine while reading this chapter. Someone who would already body Luffy, gaining even more buffs.

At that time we were holding out hope One Piece might have stakes though. Now we know even if Luffy literally gets killed he will be revived back to life and gain a power up out of nowhere. Power ups aren't earned, villains are clowned, look at the Gorosei on egghead. They are unkillable and that didn't stop them from looking like clowns and the stakes felt like nothing.
