Seems more like it is Luffy who saved Shanks.
It is Luffy who made him abandon his familial ties.
He couldn't carry on Roger's will because of who he was.
Makes more sense why Shanks gave his hopes to an 8-year old kid.
Shanks let the fish eat his mark of the abyss.

Eyepatch Shanks can only mean two things:
1. either he survives the series, becoming the "eyepatch pirate" Oda has always wanted to draw;
or,
2. BB does kill Shanks, and Luffy starts wearing the eyepatch in honor of his idol. So, will from Joyboy, strawhat from Roger, eyepatch from Shanks.
