I think it would be better for the series if they do and this is a Saobody defeat for the Strawhats

We are in the rare position where the villains do need to leave quite sharpish, so it makes a bit of sense for them to beat the Strawhats but leave them alive, with Imu needing to get back to mariejois and Sommers and Killingham needing to get away with the kids.

The Strawhats having an outright defeat would have:

Imu gets firmly established as the top of the world

The Omen powerup maintains it’s threat level for EoS with Zoro and Sanji
unable to even beat the lower tier users, let alone the Gorosei and Shamrock

All the Strawhats get another “we’re not hot shit after all” moment and start to take things really seriously. Luffy should be so badly injured that he’s out of commision for like a month, and the others from Zoro down to Usopp should take that time to seriously train (and that means every one of them having worked on their Haki for it)

And maybe that can explain Usopp’s so far inexplicable treatment so far this arc, where them failing to protect his beloved Elbaf’s children causes him to decide to man the fuck up for the future. All the other Strawhats will be hit by this as well, but mostly Usopp.

Does modern Oda have the balls for it? Probably not.
Zoro & Sanji won't lose

On my second reread and I think Luffy's personality change in G5 was finally his downfall in this chapter.

He allowed himself to be so easily distracted by IMU's Omens and that left him open to be stabbed by IMU's void sword. He needs to get that personality shift sorted out, because he only seems weak due to the fact he's always fucking around. He has the speed to dodge and react to IMU, he displayed the speed prior to getting stabbed.

This chapter also confirmed for me with the genie bit that "the ability to use your imagination" is quite literally no limits to how he uses his body. I'm also noticing some simularities between Luffu and IMU's powers as well.

I don’t think Luffy’s Gear 5 personality affects him in fights. Nika wasn’t an issue when he beat Kaido, I don’t see why it would affect him in a fight. You could argue that his personality is responsible for Vegapunk’s death for sure, but I definitely don’t believe he is nerfed by his personality lol.

One thing caught my attention - do you remember how in chapter 1122 in a flashback we saw Joy Boy talking to Emet and many people assumed that Joy Boy has a wooden leg after that.

Interestingly, in one of the panels in this chapter, Luffy also looks like he has a peg leg.

And now i wonder if we're actually right, or if it's just a matter of shading and angle.

:Think::choppawhat::sus:
Nice catch on this small detail but honestly for me it is just an artistic choice even though I believe Joyboy does have a peg leg.

I wonder if Kidd, wherever he is (maybe on the island), felt a level of L that reminded him of his own.

Luffy's wound is probably a bit worse than the one he received from Katakuri (which blew away part of his belly, like a kidney, some gut and muscles, no problem), even ignoring that the spine is probably not a factor in OP (same as the brain). But the wound by Katakuri was when both were already a bit winded, whereas Imu is still fine (hough not 100%), and both weren't far apart in strength, and Katakuri gave himself the same wound...

So not only doesn't it look like he would be able to continue fighting, but with a wound like that Luffy would probably have to retire from fighting forever, if he survives. But I'm sure Oda doesn't care about that. (He'll just cut short his lifespan more and more and say "it was worth it".)
Even if the shock of losing Sommers, Killingham and Gunko makes Imu weak as a kitten, it might be much for Luffy.

Presumably Luffy has to unlock another gimmick to get in fighting shape and heal himself and Loki... I guess Gunko will play a role in distracting Imu until then...

Too bad that roughly since Enel (correction: Crocodile) Luffy was often the physically weaker guy, who used or unlocked a trick to overcome the difference. And it just won't change.

What's interesting is that this chapter seems to show that the "Wings" of the Goofy apparently aren't far apart from him in strength. At least Zoro so far (jk).

Both Imu and Joy Boy speak like children, but they do not sound exactly the same. Joy Boy sounds rougher and more casual, while Imu sounds more polite and well brought up. Joy Boy says “ōtō seyo,” which means “Respond” or “Come in.” This normally sounds formal and adult-like in Japanese. However, it is written in hiragana instead of kanji. This helps Japanese readers understand that the speaker is actually a child using grown-up words. Hmm.png
