This argument is not headcannon, at least. Shanks is a swordsman, which means he below Mihawk, not by much of course.
these guys can go to any length to make their arguments true even twisting words of someone https://onepiece.fandom.com/wiki/SBS_Volume_87 Oda was saying when he first appeared we didnt know how he actually fights .... let alone that Why was shanks and mihawk even considered rivals and why were they even fighting if Shanks isnt a swordsman.... but no Shanks isnt a swordsman he doesnt fight with sword he fights with his charms and defeats them with his charms like boa hancock...Mihawk should've picked Garp for rivalry and gaining WSS :seriously:

Why would Oda say such a thing though. Clearly, he plans other stuff for Shanks.
different ways to fight with a sword.
they dont exactly all fight the same . however its more ludicrous to assume these duels were only restricted to showing skills with a blade.

only that rules it out imo is not if he has something other than swordmanship but if thats his primary fighting style.
is ashura part of pure swordmanship ?
strong doubt here, however it complements his primamry fighting style
as does fujitora's gravity
and shiryu's invisibility.

I don't understand pure swordsmanship, You fight with a sword or you don't. Just a matter of you skill. Luffy can be a swordsman, but he sucks as we know atm.
pure swordsmanship is a point people used to exclude some people from swordsman category
most notably
fujitora, shanks, law
but it has started to break down due to prevalence of fighters like shiryu, fujitora who have dfs and are swordsmen.
also sparked another controversial convo when roger used his sword to overpower a "pure swordsman" in oden.
