Part of that might be the fact that the hieght difference is beyond a pain in the ass to animate.

Like, Zoro is like 1.8 meters. King is 5 meters.

This was a problem for Luffy vs Katakuri as well.

Again, I wouldn't be fretting. We've yet to get to the truly important stuff for Zoro vs King.

next episode should be more solid since that is more action oriented(but shouldn't be particularly great), but 1060 and very likely 1062 are going to be the main milestones of the fight.
I hope I've heard insiders praise episodes 1060 and 1062

Okay, though, I'm taking the words back. The 1060 will be the same as the 1052, where there was a hybrid form of King. Its animators are: Masahiro Shimanuki and Midori Matsuda... The episode is doomed to fail, I checked out their animations and the episodes they were in. These are absolutely unremarkable episodes with unmemorable animation

Bro, Masahiro Shimanuki is famously the potato animator, but Midori Matsuda is the chief animation director, a massive Zoro fan, and was responsible for animating and correcting a significant part of Zoro vs gyukimaru round 1. Even then, their role is just to make the art look nice, which they are very good at.

There have been plenty of Shimanuki episodes that have been very well done because there is either a good director or storyboard artist, or just tons and tons of other animators on board. The most obvious case in point is the fact Shimanuki was the animation director for Snakeman vs Katakuri.

Tu Yong Ce is a rarer case where he is both a great animation director but also contributes a ton of his own high quality key animation.Pretty sure it was mentioned that Tu Yong Ce will be animating Ifrit Janbe personally.

Anyway, here's some nice production materials for the nice Big Mum action at the beginning of the episode.

I didn't see Sakugi, Shimanuki, or Matsuda. But given the lack of sakuga on YouTube, there is hardly anything to see there.
I don't really understand what an animation director means, but I'm sure they are less useful than the animators themselves. At least, I understand what the essence of the work and animators is, and what their finished product looks like

Animation directors basically do touch ups, ie, the correct(redraw parts) of other animators works, while typically also animating themselves. Most animation supervisors tend to focus on just correcting a few key scenes while also potentially submitting their own scene for the episode, while more draconian animation supervisors actually correct pretty much the entire episode to be in their style(a far more difficult feat) and may or may not contribute their own scene.

A good example of a more draconanian animation supervisor back in the day was Katsumi Ishizuka, who pretty much redrew entire episodes(or at least the half of an episode he was in charge of) to look in his style.

I'm not suprised that they don't have many sakuga compilations, though I would have expected one or two for Masahiro Shimanuki in relation to his dragon ball work.

Masahiro Shimanuki was massive name on DB and DBZ, being a strong contender for best animator on that series, probably most notably animating the Kamehameha vs Galick Gun beam struggle in the Saiyan arc. Sadly, he got progressively worse as DBZ went on, his stuff in GT being a lot weaker, and he immediately fell off as soon as joined One Piece(I think his first episode is like episode 5). His stuff in early one piece was serviceable, and arguably was still some of the stronger stuff from the series very very early on, but they were nowhere near the hieghts of his dragonball stuff.

Edit: The job of animation directors is to try and correct or redraw scenes to be on model, or at the very least, visually consistent with the rest of the episode(which typically features their style).

Midori Matsuda is a good animation director(even though she isn't a terribly exceptional animation, because she knows how to draw the characters on model).

EDITEDIT: Even though Shimanuki is the animation director, he tends to get corrected by the chief animation directors(who Matsuda is one of them), whose job is to check all other levels of corrections and add the final touches pretty much.

Can you give an example of an animation or episode other than a snakeman? It's just that I saw 1052 and 1050 episodes in their track record

They did 1044, the second half for he Black Maria fight, 971, which was the very beginning of Oden’s last stand.

Again, Shimanuki stuff is more dependent on the animators under him than anything else.

Matsuda being on the episode is a good sign since she doesn’t typically act as an animation director for many episodes and is someone who tends to stick to the model sheets.
