I wish Oda had expanded a bit on what he is even doing here and in the manga. Is he using haki at all or is it just a laser barrier? Or a bit of both?

G4 is coated in haki.
In my day the visuals for coating was lightning around a fist or a weapon, non conquerors can do it too.
Now we're using panels and frames from clashes.

It wasn't, in the manga Kizaru was firing lasers at Luffy while blocking, in the anime he's just defending with random star shields

There's only one thing I ask from Toei
To animate Kizaru blitzing everyone and feeding Luffy, showing that he literally was at his mercy.
If this happens I fully expect some animeonlies to drop this series.
