Solid episode

We finally learned what Rayleigh did back at the auction house, which was a nice touch.

Man Luffy/Hyo got walloped into the wall lol, I am kinda happy Luffy didn’t get used to Ryou after just doing it once.
(Luffy: Old man, please teach me level 2 haki. also Luffy: Did I just use level 3 haki lol)
[(Level 1 (Beginner) -Covering body parts with Haki.

Level 2 (Advanced) - Emitting Haki to strike down opponents like Rayleigh did with the elephant and Hyogoro did with that Alpacaman.

Level 3 (More advanced) - Making Haki flow into your enemy's body and destroying it from within? (Like Rayleigh removing Camie’s collar and Luffy removing his and Hyogoro’s collar)]

Queen being an ancient zoan user and the ability to heal quickly is why Queen getting back up makes sense,

That Brachi Bomber was top tier.

Holy shit Big Mom got her memories back.

This is easily one of the best animated episodes in the entire arc. The second half in particular nearly never stopped moving.

Tu Yong made a monstrous effort, animating 40 cuts in the first half, and the entirety of the second half of the episode(he solo animated the second half), which had a monstrous 200 cuts.

And the output itself was insanely good.

Tu Yong Ce's brachio bomber definitely did a fantastic job borrowing from Katsumi Ishizuka.

Okay, I'm just going to post the notable fun scenes that weren't by Tu Yong Ce this episode.

Everything else was by Tu.

The reanimation of the collar breaking was by Tingu Yang, an animator who previously hand some stuff on 914 which showed the aftermath of the elephant gun on Kaido after Katsumi Ishizuka's scene. His work here is pretty nice. I like Yang's wind effects work in this scene. They have really fun sharp shapes to them that are cool to look at, and are actually pretty well timed.

Junwen Tan animated the fantastic slap as well as some of the follow up. His scene is fantastic, packed with effects work and background animation, and the camera rotation also does a fantastic job of giving weight to the follow through of the slap. There is just so much to love here. I also think the character acting did a fantastic job accentuating the comedy of this episode.

Looking forward to seeing him do more stuff for the anime.

The final scene was by a relatively new animator Yuu Koike. The did the stuff after the reanimation of the collar breaking with the old man measuring his resolve. I really liked their effects work around Big Mum jumping down from the ring.

Every other bit of good animation in the episode was by Tu.

EDIT:
Junwen Tan also animated this scene.

  • I think it's funny how Robin's skin color becomes lighter every time we flashback to before the time skip.
  • :beckmoji: You made us sit through Camie's explosion and the reaction faces just to cuff off Rayleigh using Ryuo with a close up shot?
  • A truly magnificent Yonko-level slap:amazing: Urashima and Sumo Luffy, bow before your new Yokozuna.
  • A bit strange that Toei decided not to add invisible aura to the Advanced Haki explanation (except for a split second moment of impact). Probably for the best, since every time Luffy or Kaido explode with colorful aura then the viewers would think that's Ryou in use.
  • Disgusting but hilarious how much they milked Hyogoro's death:milaugh:
  • Tsunagoro gets some filler dialogue and the rest of the Yakuza get their cameos. Very pleasing, these guys need filler love.
  • I am sorry, but every time Kamawatsu speaks I just hear Big Mom's Prometheus. Maybe this is where he was all Wano arc?
  • BRACHIO BOMBER HITTING LIKE A METEORITE. HOT DAMN. THAT'S WHY HE'S WORTH 1.3 BILLION.:funky:
  • Big Mom remember her smiling children's faces was sweet. I don't know if that's her dancing graveyard zombie puppies-level of delusion or they actually showed her that kind of love at some point, but it's still sweet.
Good episode. Extra long recap, but the consistent high level of animation more than made up for it. Even just Big Mom chasing and whacking Luffy around Udon looked surreal. I don't know why there was so much work put into that, but I can't complain. O-Lin turning into Big Mom was the perfect stopping point.

Yeah, that episode was pretty poggers.

Aside from maybe the flashback and some of the fake out death stuff, I don't believe the episode really dragged too much. The direction was pretty tight in the first half even if it wasn't as animated as the second.

Animation wise, this episode is insanely good, especially the second half, which is pretty much non-stop movement 95% of the time. Tu Yong Ce knocked out of the park with pretty much every tiny little bit of action in this episode.

Its absolutely insane how well some of the stuff he did was. Its not just impressive because of how much he animated, but how well it was animated. Scenes like the Brachio Bomber by themselves would have been enough to make an episode noteworthy, but the entire second half is just filled with really nice action animation that doesn't stop. It makes for an absolutely fantastic animation director debut.

The animation also did a great job of selling a lot of the comedy through character acting and visuals, which Oda is highly dependent on. The timing of the jokes landed really well thanks in great part to the animation.

Overall, awesome episode, decent direction exalted by fantastic animation.

I have frankly zero expectations for next episode. Literally none. The animation looks like its going to be totally outsourced to a fairly meh studio. I don't expect anything animation wise, and I think the virus looks really ugly with that green. I'm thinking a good director is needed to make that sort of effect work, because right now, its not doing anything for me.

This thread is fantastic, such detailed and interesting information! Really helps to get an insight into the production behind this episode and the anime generally! The animation this episode was sublime too! I can only imagine how much this arc will look in hindsight when it's over and we get to see everything animated by then!
I go back to WCI and enjoy scenes from it a lot more now and picking up new details here and there for example.

Queen vs BM has been so worth the wait in the anime!
