One Piece is Based on an Old Theme
The theme One Piece is based on is, "Any sufficiently advanced form of technology is indistinguishable from magic."
Devil Fruit abilities aren't magic! But they're pretty close. They're technology. It's spirit technology.
This spirit technology is being passed off as real science because it's based on ancient beliefs that involve subtle energy.
Eastern philosophies like Buddhism and Hinduism claim they possess special beliefs that are universally true. Therefore, they believe that they have an understanding about the universe that is unparalleled. Practitioners think technology based on these beliefs would be a form of ultimate technology that can never be improved because it is based on an intricate understanding of the universe. In other words, they believe that it is superior technology to any other form of technology that could ever exist.
Do you see what I'm getting at? The Ancient Kingdom in the story embodies this concept. These people are believed to have an innate understanding of the universe and they have technology that cannot be understood by anybody and it cannot be improved on. That's how powerful the Ancient Kingdom really was in the story.
You could simply call it Haki Technology because Haki is the subtle energy that is involved here.
You can even call it Willpower Technology if you're not comfortable calling it Spirit Technology (which is what it really is).
The story takes this so far that it actually tries to convince you that the modern physics books 📚 need to be scrapped because things like Love are stopping Light.
