It sounds like Netflix is committed to One Piece long-term. Dropping out of the WB bid was the best thing to happen to this show.

“One Piece,” the long-running Japanese pirate saga-turned-live-action hit, topped Netflix’s charts in 75 countries after it made its debut in August 2023. Its success has helped fuel the streamer’s broader push into anime, a genre that Netflix says now reaches more than half of its global audience.

On Tuesday, Netflix is announcing an expansion of the franchise. A third season of the live-action show, titled “One Piece: The Battle of Alabasta,” is set for 2027. The company is also developing a reboot of the original anime series — with creator Eiichiro Oda involved — as well as a Lego animated special due Sept. 29.

Netflix walked away from a deal with Warner Bros that would have dramatically expanded its library to include properties like “Harry Potter” and “Superman.” It’s now leaning into anime as a rich trove of stories and characters — having also recently unveiled a new slate of anime projects at AnimeJapan, the world’s largest anime show, in March. They include the soccer show “Blue Lock,” the dark fantasy “Jujutsu Kaisen” and the supernatural comedy “Dandelion.”

“If Netflix’s goal is to entertain the world, it’s hard to entertain the world without anime,” said Jonathan Helfgot, Netflix’s vice president of marketing.

Netflix confirms that One Piece season 2 met internal success metrics

On engagement, the company said its primary internal quality metric reached another all-time high in the first quarter of fiscal 2026.

The first quarter featured exceptional content performance led by the fourth season of Bridgerton, which generated 94 million views.

Other successful first-quarter releases included One Piece S2 (40M views). Given the franchise’s multi-generational fanbase, Netflix recently announced a third season of the series, along with a LEGO One Piece animated special and a One Piece anime series.

Just watched One Piece Live series first few episodes. It exceeds my expectations. I did not expect it to be so good. When I first heard about One Piece Live action series I was sceptical about it because of OP' s weird theme and power system might be hard to adapt in the live action.
But they did great job.
Hope that many non anime people will start to read/watch the original content

"Eternal rival" sounds like they hate eachother's guts, though.

Also, when is even the last time Kishimoto was involved in a Naruto product? Is he even with this live action?
I don't know if Kishimoto is a formal producer on this project like Oda is with the live-action One Piece but he did give his blessing and input to the director, Daniel Cretton, and has seen his previous movies (Shang-Chi, Just Mercy, Short Term 12).

“When I heard of Destin’s attachment, it happened to be right after watching a blockbuster action film of his, and I thought he would be the perfect director for Naruto,” said Kishimoto in a statement. “After enjoying his other films and understanding that his forte is in creating solid dramas about people, I became convinced that there is no other director for Naturo. In actually meeting Destin, I also found him to be an open-minded director who was willing to embrace my input, and felt strongly that we would be able to cooperate together in the production process.”
I was iffy on the idea of a film at first but looking back on the manga arcs, I think Part 1 of Naruto could actually be structured as a solid 3-4 film series like the early Harry Potter movies.
First film is the prologue and Land of Waves where the fantasy setting is laid out and the main characters of Team 7 and their interpersonal dynamics are explored
Second film is the Chunin Exams that goes up through the preliminaries (it's basically just Hunger Games)
Third and fourth films are a two-parter that comprise the Konoha Crush, Search for Tsunade and Sasuke Recovery
