Just like any other literature, you gotta read One Piece.
Its not hard, just read the speech bubbles from right to left.
Im not sure how difficult it is for people, but when Yams said that she wants to be be free like Oden did. She means that she intends on following that dream. If she said that she wants to be free as Oden did, that is a past conjunction.
