"Retconning Luffy's DF"
One: Shanks and his crew don't eat fruits.
We know this.
So it was already suspicious that they just took a supposedly random and unimportant fruit "from pirates".
Two: This is shown even more during WW's explanation. Shanks wouldn't go through all that trouble and fight random CP0 agents for a rubber DF. Makes no sense.
He had to have been planning something. There was something behind the scenes.
And now we know why he did that and what really happened.
Three: The explanation for DFs is pretty good, other series have a similar explanation, maybe it's just you being biased/eager to hate like others that blinds you from seeing this.

What was so bad about Rebecca? Yeah she was annoying, but her character actually had a good arc and has a solid reason to exist.
Chopper at least stood for something that has a personal connection to him.

To believe a man with rubber devil fruit becomes the strongest is absolute stupidity. I saw it from way earlier that paramecia devil fruit shouldn't let Luffy change his form like he does in gear 4. In a world where there is a dragon, magma, even darkness as df, believing Luffy has a simple rubber fruit is the fault of the reader. Its not a retcon, considering Shanks has the fruit and he stole it from the WG ship, there is no chance of it being a not so special df. Those who see that as a retcon, don't know what's a retcon or hate Luffy. Thats simple.
When its said that there's no rubber devil fruit, Shanks said Gomu Gomu to brainwash Luffy and protect him from being haunted by the WG. Where's the retcon? Retcon would be Luffy suddenly having a Electricity devil fruit or a wind Logia.

If Yamato had a good personality and the Oden shit wasn't there she'd be pretty good.
She's already quite strong and competent in battle, she just needs some character.
No offense but I believe Ghostly and other people who believe this ( mainly Reddit users iirc ) just like to shit on Oda.
I mean they're better than Lee as he exists to just shit on EVERY SINGLE THING ODA DOES, but still.
As you said, it literally makes 0 sense for him to just have a rubber fruit. Sure, it'd be nice if he made it with just that, but stuff like Gear 5th fits the story and his personality BETTER.
People would want him to just be rubber and become PK with only that ability possibly due to powerscaling.
People would want him to have Gear 5th either due to powerscaling, OR the liberation/freedom themes and what not.
You can especially see how people really think after Oda revealed Zoro's family tree in a SBS.
Now they're saying he's a hack and all that but, who were the ones hoping for Kidd to defeat Shanks or push him to mid/high diff even though his backstory was literally revealed in a SBS too?
That's at least one thing Oda is really good at. He can root out the real fans and people who wear their biased, black-as-charcoal hearts on their sleeves.

Just before he lauches his final attack to beat Enel, a woman prays to the Sun God to keep Enel away akin to how Kaido's defeat came after the ballons in fire festival had the wishes of the people of Wano to be freed from Kaido and Orochi. He linked Oden's writing in poneyglyph way back in Skypiea to Wano.
