He's pretty mid character wise. Cool but not an interesting personality.
That's up for debate. Everyone has their favs but it's undeniable to me that writing wise most of the Akatsuki, several Kage, Sannin and even guys like Danzo were way more interesting than Gai.
I mean all the discussion around Gai was always "how strong do you think he'll be with the last gate ?"
Sure enough we've seen it. It was cool, made little to no sense that he was that strong but that's about it. He also should've croaked after that.
