Is the chapter consistently good or is it a "whoa, these two final pages are pretty damn cool, while the rest are mediocre filler" deal?

Lemme guess, Sommers tries to surrender after Waban's assault, but Imu, enraged after feeling Sommers sustaining permanent damage (there's probably some kinda psychic link that lets Imu experience damage that bypasses the immortality he has granted), somehow partially manifests in Gunko's body and proceeds to perforate him with arrows, ending his life.

Wouldn't it make more sense if they drill Gaban?

I don't think Gaban is about to run out of old legend tax this fast, it's as simple as that. On the other hand, Imu was shown to be an impulsive and vindictive individual, so it would make sense for them to immediately lash out against someone who in their eyes failed them.

If Sommers died, I honestly wouldn't find anything surprising or shocking about it.

He's a character we barely know. Instead, a wounded Gaban would be much more impactful.

Nah, don't underestimate them. Even if that were to occur, some of them may try to argue that Sabo's "performance" against Imu + Gorosei was somehow superior to Gaban's, and then unironically scale DR Zoro to ~ Fuji (aka someone superior to Sabo) level.
